  • Itimad-ud-Daulah’s Tomb Overview

Itimad-ud-Daulah’s Tomb is a Mughal mausoleum made of white marble and often regarded as ‘Baby Taj Mahal’. The tomb was built in 1628 by Jahangir’s wife Nur Jahan for her father Mir Gheyas Beg later known as Itimad-ud-Daulah. The architecture of tomb is a little different from the structures built during the first phase of Mughal era. This was the first structure of Mughal era in which pietra dura (parchinkari) art is used and the first to be built on the banks of River Yamuna. Basically Indo-Islamic architecture with the use of arched entrance and octagonal shaped towers make this tomb more attractive for visitor’s point of view. Distant view of the tomb looks like a jewel box set in a garden. Perhaps this magnificent mausoleum became the inspiration for the construction of one of the Seven Wonders of the World the ‘Taj Mahal’. Main attraction for visitors in this tomb is its Dome, built in grand Persian architecture, the Gates, made with red sandstone having geometric designs on white marble, The Chhatris, one on each corner rise from an octagonal base and decorated with jail works and the Garden around the tomb divided into four quadrants having walkways and water channels.
