Geography of Varanasi:

Varanasi city is geographically located at 25 degree north latitude and 83 degree east longitude, which indicates the location in temperate zone. The temperature varies from 5 degree to 40 degree throughout the year. Varanasi is located in the center of Gangetic plain of north India, in the eastern part of the state Uttar Pradesh. The beautiful city is situated along the left crescent shaped bank of River Ganga, connected by numerous stairways in about eighty Ghats, hundreds of decorated temples and thousands of big umbrellas of pujaris and purohits assisting the visitors in rituals and worship. Urban and sub-urban Varanasi occupies an area nearly 112 square kilometers. The land of Varanasi is very fertile and the farmers of the area grow many food grains, vegetables, oilseeds and pulses. Varanasi experiences a humid subtropical climate with large variation in temperature in summers and winters. Annual average rainfall in the region is nearly 112 cm. Hot west winds blow in summer and cold waves in winters.
