  • Kaal Bhairav Mandir Overview

Temple of Kaal Bhairav is believed to be most ancient temple of Kashi located at Vishweshwarganj, Varanasi. People say that Kaal Bhairav has been appointed the Kotwal (Guardian) of Kashi by Lord Shiva. No one is permitted to enter Kashi or leave Kashi without the order of Kaal Bhairav. Even Dharmaraj/Yamaraj has to get permission of Kaal Bhairav to take the soul of a person if dies in Kashi. People of Kashi tell a story about the appointment of Kaal Bhairav as Kotwal of Kashi. The story is conflict between Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu to be more powerful, each claimed to be superior to other. Vedas were given responsibility to decide it. All the four Vedas declared that neither Brahma nor Vishnu but Shiva is the supreme power of universe. Brahma disagreed and mocked at Shiva, Shiva got angry and created a new power as ‘the king of Kaal’ and named it Kaal Bhairav.
