  • Panchaganga Ghat Overview

Panchaganga Ghat is one of the five most important pilgrimages of Kashi and currently one of the most vibrant Ghats in Varanasi. In ancient days this Ghat was considered to be second most important places in Kashi due to its recognition as Vishnu-Kshetra. Its ancient name was Bindumadhav Ghat because of big Bindumadhav (Vishnu) temple on the Ghat which was destroyed by Mughal ruler Aurangzeb and a mosque Alamgir was constructed. After that the name of the Ghat changed to Panchaganga Ghat or Panchnad Ghat. According to a mythological verse Ganga is invisibly the confluence of four other rivers Yamuna, Saraswati, Kirna and Dhootpap, due to which the Ghat is called Panchaganga or Panchnad Teerth. There is a big fair from Shukla Ekadashi to Purnima of Kartik, pilgrims visit here in thousands, take bath in holy river site Panchaganga and light up the Ghat by lighting oil lamps. The festival is called Deepmalika festival of Panchaganga. Deep Hazara pillar holding thousands of lamps stands on this Ghat had been built by Ahilyabai Holkar. Panchaganga Ghat has strong association with several important figures of Hinduism considered to be spiritual leaders. They were Adi Shankaracharya, Goswami Tulsi Das, Kabir, Ravidas, Guru Nanak, and Tailanga Swami.
