  • Pratapeshwar Temple Overview

Pratapeshwar Temple is perhaps the newest temple in western group of temples in Khajuraho. It is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple was built by Raja Pratap Singh in nineteenth century but unfortunately remained locked for nearly sixty years after independence of India due to Reorganization Act of MP, Muslims claimed it being Islamic monument but the presence of a Lingam inside the sanctum denied their claim. Government declared it disputed in 1956 and a lock was put on its door which was opened in 2016.  The beautiful temple is situated in the same complex which houses Vishwanath temple, Lakshman temple, Kandariya Mahadev temple, Devi Jagdambika temple etc. This temple consists of ardha-mandap, mahamandap, and sanctum having the Lingam. Architecture of this temple has mixture of three different styles, having Rajputana styled dome over ardha-mandap, a pagoda style of ceiling over mahamandap and a typical shikhar over the sanctum.
