Khajuraho is well known for its beautiful templ...
Vamana Temple is an eleventh century Hindu Mandir dedicated to one of the avatar of Lord Vishnu the Vamana. The temple features an entrance porch, mahamandap, vestibule and a sanctum with the dwarf image of Lord Vamana. It stands as a reminiscent of the bygone era and boasts of marvelous architecture that is symbolic of the fine stone craftsmanship. The exterior walls of the temple are adorned with intricate sculptures of the apsaras and celestial nymphs in sensuous postures. Other carvings that can be recognized here exhibit varied facets of life like musicians, women in front of mirrors, dancing girls and couples in erotic positions. Archaeologically the temple is recognized as one without ambulatory temple, consisting a seven projection sanctum, vestibule, mahamandap with lateral transepts and entrance porch of which only the plinth has survived. Its shikhar is unencumbered by any subsidiary shikhars and is embellished with a fret work of chaitya-arches, contrast to the other developed local temples. It is also noteworthy for the mahamandap a peculiar roof known as samvarana which is characteristic of the medieval temples of western India.
