The colossal statue of Lord Hanuman located at the temple site of Khajuraho is believed to be the oldest monument of the complex. There is an inscription written in Sanskrit gives a date of 316 CE but the inscription has the name of king Harsh of Chandela dynasty who ruled in tenth century. The statue is very old but a shrine has been built recently with a sheltered roof and white washed walls, perhaps in order to protect the oldest monument of Khajuraho. A 2.5 meter high statue of Lord Hanuman coated in red lead paint has a short dedicatory inscription on the pedestal dated to the 316 of the king Harsh era. This equates to 922 AD in our calendar making this statue one of the earliest inscribed image of Lord Hanuman to be found anywhere in India.
