Gadisar Lake is an artificial lake located in the southern part of the city Jaisalmer. It is like an oasis in the heart of desert and a boon for local residents of arid state. This lake was built by the founder and the king of Jaisalmer Rawal Jaisal in 1156 and named it Jaisalasar Lake. Nearly two hundred years later the lake was renovated and beautified by Rawal Gadsi Singh and the name changed to Gadisar Lake. The entry gate of the famous Gadisar Lake is itself a famous monument called ‘Tillon Ki Pol’ means gateway of dunes. It is an archway artistically carved on rich yellow sandstones and forms a majestic looming entrance to the Gadisar Lake. The lake itself offers a brilliant view to save in the minds memory and also in the camera. The beautiful lake offers peaceful and serene surroundings to spend some time with family and friends. Boating in the lake or walking around on foot along its shore tourists have fun with fishes in the lake, birds flying in search of fishes and beautiful view of Jaisalmer Fort and its reflection in the lake. The lake region is dotted with chhatris or raised platforms in the middle of the lake which was probably used by the kings or other royal family members to enjoy the lake in seclusion. There are other shrines along the embankment and ghats with steps at occasional intervals.
