  • Nathmal Ki Haveli Overview

Nathmal Ki Haveli, the authorized residence of the Prime Minister of Rawal Kingdom of Jaisalmer, Mohata Nathmal, is believed to be one of the most splendid constructions of those days. Architect of the construction were two brothers of Nathmal Lulu and Hathi, both the brothers started the work at same time but due to lack of perfect measuring instruments the building work ended with irregular unique structure from symmetry point of view.  Build with Yellow sandstone the haveli has a wonderful architectural blend of Rajasthani Rajputana structures. The Haveli looks magnificent at sunrise and sunset when the entire edifice lights up in yellow rays of the sun. The exterior walls have elaborate carvings on them and the interiors have been adorned with rich paintings from the olden days. A number of sturdy pillars lightly painted with modern touch hold the roof of the Haveli. Haveli is full of the paintings of the lifestyle of the people of those days and the signal of arrival of modern days and technologies. Two life sized replicas of majestic elephants have been carved out of yellow sandstones and have been placed at the entrance. These mighty elephant sculptures flanking the main gate are not only decorative pieces but are also placed as if they are welcoming the guests of the Haveli. It is believed that the main chamber of the Haveli has been carved out of rocks and the first storey has been carved out of a solid rock boulder. The Haveli is replete with Jharokhas or balconies and spacious courtyards to suit the climate and weather of the desert. All in all the Haveli is an architectural masterpiece and still continues to be one of the most visited places in Jaisalmer.
